With so many players on the internet all competing for the user’s attention, websites, platforms and systems online all need to have a distinctly different look and feel from each other. A business's website or app must have the ability to leave a lasting impression on a customer. It’s the user experience design that ensures this lasting impression.
Why would a customer prefer your product over hundreds of others that offer the same service?
UX design needs to serve a purpose that goes beyond just making the interface look pretty or eye-catching. It must be capable of delivering the end result that the user experience is intended for.
Now, in an online environment where limitless innovation is possible, a UX designer’s work can be both exciting and challenging and yet, at the same time must stay focused on maintaining usability for the end-user. In order to make the user experience attractive to the user, a UX designer must always consider not just what the user wants, but also what they know and expect. And while trying to meet the needs of the user, the best designers understand that a balance between standardization and innovation is the key to great user experience.
With new innovative ways of improving UX design sprouting up every day, we at UX Fairy want to help you keep working on improving your design practice.
Here are some tips that you can use to improve your UX design to deliver better results:
Refine Your Language – Non-UX folk aren’t familiar with the technical terms that are used in UX Design. When speaking with clients for example, communicate the UX design in their language to help them understand concepts and ideas better.
Stay off the beaten path – Using the tried and tested structures and protocols restricts your creativity when building interfaces. Rather, follow the path the user wants to take to build your UX design to be more effective.
Don’t be afraid to Recycle – As a seasoned UX designer, you would have worked on a variety of projects giving you a wealth of insight and ideas to refer to. Don’t be afraid to revisit those ideas to mix and match for new projects.
Take a break – Working so closely on something causes us to lose sight of the bigger picture. Taking a break from UX design to try other things like product development or software design is a great way to expand your skill set and gain perspective of how other teams work.
Peer Review/Audit your work regularly – While working on projects, we’re so focussed in working towards delivering results, we often don’t take a minute to stop and review the progress. By having periodic peer reviews along the design process, you’re able to identify flaws and holes in the early design stages which makes it easier to rectify.
Try New Tools – Continuous innovation in UX design means new tools are being made available almost constantly to improve the process of designing interfaces. Using these new tools could greatly help make your UX process more efficient.
Keep Reading – Reading is still the best way of learning and improving. Read up on the latest developments in UX, buy textbooks from leading UX designers, or even consider taking some UX courses.
